Dorevolutionary Photo Studio of Khodukin in Kharkov: a family portrait from the late Russian Empire

This publication examines a rare family photograph produced in the pre-revolutionary photo studio of I. Khodukin in Kharkov during the final decades of the Russian Empire.

The portrait depicts a multi-generational urban family group consisting of an older woman, her adult son, his wife and a young child. The carefully arranged composition reflects the traditions of studio photography in provincial imperial cities during the early 20th century. Despite heavy damage and fading, the photograph preserves a strong emotional atmosphere and remains an important visual document of everyday life in old Kharkov.

Particular attention is drawn to the clothing and expressions of the sitters. The older woman wears an elaborate fashionable hat decorated with large elements typical of late Victorian and early Belle Époque urban fashion. The seated man appears calm and self-possessed, dressed in a dark suit with a characteristic moustache of the era. The younger woman standing behind the group presents a more restrained appearance, wearing a headscarf and dark coat, while the child occupies the symbolic center of the composition.

The article also discusses the approximate dating of the photograph, which most likely belongs to the period between 1905 and 1915. Several features support this dating:

Special attention is given to the history of photographic culture in Kharkov before World War I. The studio of I. Khodukin appears to have belonged to the respectable middle tier of Kharkov photographers serving the urban middle class rather than the aristocratic elite. Even so, the surviving portrait demonstrates the technical and artistic standards typical of provincial imperial photography during the final years before the collapse of the empire in 1917.

the visual culture of urban middle class families;

Today such photographs remain valuable historical artifacts preserving the faces, emotions and domestic world of people who lived through the final years of old imperial Eastern Europe before the upheavals of the 20th century.

Дореволюційне фотоательє Ходукіна в Харкові: сімейний портрет пізньої Російської імперії

Ця публікація присвячена рідкісній родинній фотографії, виконаній у дореволюційному фотоательє І. Ходукіна в Харкові в останні десятиліття Російської імперії.

На портреті зображено міську родину з кількох поколінь: літню жінку, її дорослого сина, його дружину та маленьку дитину. Ретельно побудована композиція відображає традиції студійної фотографії у провінційних імперських містах початку ХХ століття. Попри сильні пошкодження та втрату контрасту, фотографія зберігає потужну емоційну атмосферу й залишається важливим візуальним документом повсякденного життя старого Харкова.

Особливу увагу привертають одяг та вирази облич персонажів. Старша жінка носить вишуканий капелюшок із великими декоративними елементами, характерними для міської моди пізньовікторіанської доби та ранньої Belle Époque. Чоловік праворуч виглядає спокійним і врівноваженим, одягнений у темний костюм із характерними для епохи вусами. Молода жінка, що стоїть позаду групи, має стриманіший вигляд, одягнена в хустку та темне пальто, тоді як дитина займає символічний центр композиції.

У статті також розглядається приблизне датування фотографії, яка, найімовірніше, була створена між 1905 та 1915 роками. На це вказують кілька ознак:

жіноча мода та капелюхи;
стиль фотографічного паспарту;
традиції композиції та позування;
а також декоративне оформлення штампа ательє Ходукіна.

Окрему увагу приділено історії фотографічної культури Харкова до Першої світової війни. У той час Харків був одним із найбільших міських та промислових центрів півдня Російської імперії, де існувало активне фотографічне середовище з престижними салонами, комерційними портретними студіями та невеликими родинними майстернями.

Ательє І. Ходукіна, ймовірно, належало до поважного середнього рівня харківських фотографів, які працювали для міського середнього класу, а не для аристократичної еліти. Попри це, збережений портрет демонструє технічний та художній рівень, характерний для провінційної імперської фотографії останніх років перед крахом імперії у 1917 році.
