This publication explores the photography studio of Jaroslav Picek, one of the many professional photographers who worked in Kharkov during the late Russian Empire period.

At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Kharkov was rapidly developing into one of the major urban and cultural centers of southern Imperial Russia. The city combined universities, trade, industry and a growing middle class, all of which contributed to the spread of studio photography and cabinet portrait culture.

Photographic ateliers became an important part of urban life. Families, students, military personnel, officials and merchants visited studios to preserve personal and family history in the form of carefully staged portraits mounted on decorative cabinet cards.

The surviving imprint of Jaroslav Picek’s studio provides another small but valuable fragment of this forgotten visual world. Such photographs help reconstruct not only individual biographies, but also the atmosphere of Kharkov streets, commercial districts and everyday urban culture before the революutions and wars of the 20th century transformed the city forever.
