Photography studio of Boris Fomich Gotlib in Odessa: the history of a portrait photography master

This publication is dedicated to the photography studio of Boris Fomich Gotlib, one of the portrait photographers who worked in Odessa during the late Russian Empire period.

At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Odessa was one of the largest and most cosmopolitan cities of the Black Sea region. The city combined trade, shipping, industry and multicultural urban life, creating fertile ground for the rapid development of professional photography studios.

Portrait photography in Odessa became not only a commercial service, but also an important cultural phenomenon. Studio portraits preserved the appearance of merchants, students, military officers, craftsmen and ordinary citizens whose lives later disappeared into the turbulence of wars and revolutions.

The surviving studio imprint of Boris Fomich Gotlib represents another valuable fragment of Odessa’s visual history. Such cabinet portraits today provide historians and collectors with important information about:

photographic aesthetics of the Russian Empire;
urban culture of Odessa;
studio design and branding;
and the social history of the Black Sea region.

The article also explores the broader photographic environment of Odessa during the imperial era, when dozens of studios competed for clients along busy commercial streets and boulevards of the rapidly growing port city.
