Provincial family photograph from Kakhovka: the studio of M. Weinstein and everyday life in Southern Ukraine

Повідомлення Tavria »

This publication examines a rare example of provincial photography from the late 19th or early 20th century, produced in the town of Kakhovka at the studio of photographer M. Weinstein.

For the southern cities of the Russian Empire during this period, it was common to find photographers of Jewish origin working in local studios and serving a broad spectrum of society, from prosperous peasants to townspeople and merchants. The very existence of a professional photographic atelier in Kakhovka reflects the gradual development of urban culture and the growing demand for portrait photography in provincial southern settlements.

The surviving cabinet card mount bearing the photographer’s name and the town designation significantly increases the historical value of the image. Regional studio works from smaller towns such as Kakhovka are encountered far less frequently than photographs originating from major urban centers like Kharkov or Odessa.

Although this was not a metropolitan studio, provincial ateliers often provide a far more authentic glimpse into the everyday lives of ordinary people of the era. Such photographs preserve clothing styles, family composition, posture and visual traditions that rarely appear in official historical records.

The article also touches upon:

provincial photography culture in Southern Ukraine;
Jewish photographers of the Russian Empire;
cabinet card traditions in small towns;
and the historical atmosphere of pre-revolutionary Kakhovka.

Particular attention is given to the social and cultural background of the family depicted in the photograph, including possible connections to Molokan religious communities in the region.
