This publication explores a cabinet portrait produced by the photography studio of Fr. de Meser in Kyiv during the late Russian Empire period.

At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Kyiv was rapidly emerging as one of the most important cultural, administrative and commercial centers of Southwestern Imperial Russia. Alongside the city’s architectural growth and expanding urban middle class, professional photography studios flourished throughout Kyiv, creating a rich visual record of pre-revolutionary society.

The studio of Fr. de Meser belonged to this vibrant photographic environment. Cabinet portraits bearing the imprint of the atelier represent valuable examples of urban portrait photography from imperial Kyiv and preserve fragments of a vanished world that disappeared after the revolutions, wars and political upheavals of the 20th century.

Particular interest is created by the studio mount itself. Decorative typography, embossed lettering and elegant cabinet card design were an important part of photographic branding during this era.
