Photography studio “Del’Amitié” in Kharkov: photographers, city streets and artistic culture at the turn of the century

This publication explores the photography studio “Del’Amitié” in Kharkov, one of the many professional ateliers that formed part of the rich photographic culture of the late Russian Empire.

At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Kharkov was rapidly evolving into a major educational, commercial and cultural center of southern Imperial Russia. Alongside universities, theatres and publishing houses, professional photography studios flourished throughout the city, documenting the appearance of an emerging urban society.

The studio “Del’Amitié” belonged to this artistic and commercial environment. Even its French-inspired name reflects the fashionable European orientation common among photographic ateliers of the era, when elegance, prestige and cosmopolitan aesthetics played an important role in attracting clients.

The surviving portrait demonstrates many characteristic features of high-quality urban studio photography from this period:

carefully balanced lighting;
formal but expressive posing;
elegant clothing and presentation;
and refined cabinet mount design.

Particular attention is drawn to the studio imprint itself. Decorative typography and branded mounts were essential elements of professional photographic identity during the imperial era. Studios competed not only through technical quality, but also through artistic reputation and visual style.

Photographs from Kharkov ateliers such as “Del’Amitié” preserve valuable fragments of everyday urban life before the revolutions and wars of the 20th century transformed the city forever.
