This fascinating group photograph from the Soviet prewar era depicts representatives of several different branches of the Soviet armed forces. Based on the uniforms, insignia and awards, the image was most likely taken in the late 1930s or very early 1941, before June 22, 1941 and the beginning of the Great Patriotic War.

The photograph appears informal and was likely taken during a period of rest, joint training or a stay at a sanatorium or military recreation facility. The interior with a large palm tree and the relaxed poses create an almost resort-like atmosphere, sharply contrasting with the rigid official portraits typical of the era.

What makes the image especially interesting is the combination of different ranks and military branches represented within a single group.

1. Senior officer on the left

The seated officer on the left appears to be the senior-ranking individual in the group. Two rectangular rank insignia known as “shpaly” are visible on his collar tabs, corresponding to the rank of Major in the prewar Red Army system.

Two service chevrons are visible on his sleeve, while on his chest he wears the medal “XX Years of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army,” established in 1938. This decoration was awarded to career military personnel who had completed twenty years of service by the twentieth anniversary of the Red Army.

The presence of this medal indicates that the officer belonged to the old cadre of Soviet military professionals whose service began shortly after the Revolution and Civil War.

2. Officer in the background

The standing officer has one “shpala” visible on his collar tabs, corresponding to the rank of Captain in the prewar Red Army rank system.

His uniform most closely resembles that of the ground forces of the Red Army. The belt equipment and overall appearance suggest a field officer from a regular army formation.

3. Central officer

The officer seated in the center wears two square collar insignia known as “kubari,” corresponding to the rank of Lieutenant.

A small parachutist badge is visible on his chest, associated with Soviet prewar parachute training and the mass paramilitary movement organized through OSOAVIAKhIM. During the 1930s such badges were considered prestigious and strongly connected with aviation, airborne training and the military romanticism of the era.

4. Sailor on the right

The figure on the right clearly stands apart from the others — he is a serviceman of the Soviet Navy.

Three sleeve stripes beneath the naval star insignia indicate a senior enlisted or junior command rank within the prewar Soviet fleet structure. His dark naval uniform contrasts sharply with the army tunics worn by the others.

The presence of a sailor alongside army and aviation-related officers makes the photograph especially vivid and historically interesting.

Most likely, the image depicts a group of friends, comrades or servicemen brought together during one of the final relatively peaceful periods before the outbreak of war.

This gives the photograph a particularly poignant atmosphere. The men captured in the image still do not know that ahead of them lie June 22, 1941, the front lines, immense losses and the largest war in Soviet history.

Today photographs like this possess significant historical value because they preserve not only the uniforms and insignia of the prewar Red Army and Soviet Navy, but also the atmosphere of the final peaceful years before the catastrophe of World War II.
