A Young Lady from Old Kyiv: A Late 19th Century Photograph from the Kaminsky & Kurko Studio

Sometimes even a small pre-revolutionary photograph can unexpectedly open an entire layer of history connected to old Kyiv. That is exactly what happened with this cabinet card from the late 19th century, produced by the “Kaminsky & Kurko” photographic studio.

The photograph depicts a young woman wearing a dark dress with sleeves and bodice details characteristic of the 1890s. In her hand she holds a small book while posing beside a decorative studio balustrade. Such compositions were extremely popular in urban photographic studios throughout the Russian Empire during the late 19th century. Books often symbolized education and belonging to the educated urban middle class. It is quite possible that the young woman was a gymnasium student or came from a family of clerks, merchants, or city intelligentsia.

The clothing helps date the photograph rather precisely. The high collar, sleeve construction, and overall silhouette point to approximately 1892–1898. During this period such fashion became widespread in Kyiv, Odessa, Warsaw, and other major cities of the empire.

The studio itself was located in Kyiv at Dmitrievskaya Street 12, near the Galician Bazaar district. Today this area belongs to the central part of the city, but even in the late 19th century it was already a lively urban neighborhood filled with shops, workshops, apartment houses, and commercial establishments. Studios like this mainly served the growing urban middle class, for whom photography was gradually becoming an essential part of family memory rather than a luxury reserved only for the wealthy.

The reverse side of the card features beautiful artwork typical of late imperial commercial photography. Decorative rays, medals, and elaborate typography were used not only for decoration but also as a form of advertising and status demonstration. Interestingly, the card mentions that negatives were preserved for future reorders, which indicates a rather professional and organized photographic business for its era.

A handwritten note survives on the back of the photograph as well. Such inscriptions always add a strong feeling of personal connection and transform the object from a simple anonymous portrait into a genuine surviving family artifact.

The photograph itself remains in relatively good condition. The gold embossed lettering on the front and the warm tones of the old albumen print are especially attractive. Despite being more than a century old, the image still feels remarkably alive.

What makes the photograph even more intriguing today is the possibility that the address still exists. Dmitrievskaya Street in Kyiv has preserved a considerable amount of pre-revolutionary architecture. That raises the fascinating possibility of locating the building and seeing what remains of the very place where this portrait was taken more than one hundred years ago.
