Unidentified Photograph from the North Caucasus — Luarasabov Studio, Ossetia or Georgia? Wedding or Ceremonial Female Portrait
Hello everyone,
I would appreciate help with identifying this photograph.
It appears to be a North Caucasus photograph from the late 19th or early 20th century. There was a partially erased stamp on the back, which seems to read:
“Caucasian Photography of O.O. Luarasabov”
or
“Luarasarov”
I am interested in:
who exactly photographer Luarasabov was;
whether this is related to Ossetia or Georgia;
whether the studio may have operated in Vladikavkaz or Tiflis;
and how typical this costume is for Ossetian women.
There is a possibility that this is:
a wedding or ceremonial female portrait from the North Caucasus.
The most interesting details are:
the headwear;
the veil;
the lace pattern along the edge of the fabric;
and the overall style of the female costume.
The portrait looks very traditional and quite different from ordinary urban studio portraits of the Russian Empire from the same period.
Any information regarding:
ethnography;
photography studios;
regional costume;
Caucasian traditions;
or the photographer’s surname
would be greatly appreciated.
I would also be very interested to know if anyone has seen other photographs bearing the Luarasabov studio mark.
