# Antique Photograph from Ufa. The O. F. German Photo Studio and Pre-Revolutionary Ufa
This cabinet portrait of a young woman was made in pre-revolutionary Ufa at the photographic studio of O. F. German. Although the image appears simple at first glance, the photograph is of interest both to collectors of antique photography and to researchers studying provincial photo studios of the late Russian Empire.
## Dating the Photograph
Based on the design of the mount, typography, and photographic style, the portrait can be dated approximately to the period between 1898 and 1910.
Several details support this dating:
* Art Nouveau style decoration on the reverse side;
* soft vignette printing;
* high dark collar;
* characteristic female hairstyle of the turn of the century.
The portrait already belongs to a later photographic era than the early Victorian cabinet portraits of the 1870s and 1880s. One can clearly see the transition toward calmer and more realistic studio photography of the early twentieth century.
## What Is Depicted in the Photograph
The photograph shows a young woman from an urban or middle-class background. Her clothing appears modest but carefully arranged. The dark collar, restrained dress style, and absence of excessive jewelry were typical of urban provincial fashion in the Russian Empire at that time.
The photographer chose a very restrained composition. The neutral background and soft lighting direct attention entirely to the sitter’s face. This style was common among provincial studios attempting to imitate the more refined photographic salons of Moscow and Saint Petersburg.
## The O. F. German Photo Studio
The reverse side reads:
“Artistic Photography of O. German. Ufa.”
The surname German may indeed indicate German ancestry. During the late nineteenth century many photographers, printers, and pharmacists in the Russian Empire came from German or Baltic German families. Such surnames were especially common in provincial cities.
The phrase:
“Artistic Photography”
is also notable.
Studios often used this expression to emphasize that they were creating artistic portraiture rather than simple mechanical photographs.
The reverse additionally contains the phrase:
“Negatives are preserved.”
This meant that clients could later order additional prints from the original glass negative.
## Pre-Revolutionary Ufa
At the time this portrait was made, Ufa was already an important provincial center of the Russian Empire. The city developed rapidly due to trade, river transportation, and railway connections. Russians, Bashkirs, Tatars, merchants, чиновники, and military personnel all lived there.
By the beginning of the twentieth century Ufa had theaters, gymnasiums, printing houses, and numerous photographic studios. It was within this urban environment that the studio of O. F. German operated.
## Ufa During the Russian Civil War
After the Revolution of 1917, Ufa became involved in the events of the Russian Civil War. Control of the city changed hands several times between opposing forces.
One of the most famous events was the Ufa Operation of 1919, connected with the advance of Admiral Kolchak’s White Army and the later return of the city to Bolshevik control.
These events dramatically changed life in Ufa. The era of pre-revolutionary artistic photography gradually disappeared along with the culture of the old empire.
## Collectible Value of the Photograph
Today photographs like this are valued primarily because of their well-preserved mount, readable studio imprint, and strong geographic attribution. Collectors are especially interested in provincial studios of the Russian Empire, many of which remain poorly documented.
Photographs from pre-revolutionary Ufa are encountered much less frequently than portraits from Moscow or Saint Petersburg. For this reason such cabinet portraits are valuable not only as family photographs, but also as historical artifacts of their era.
