Family Photograph from Samarkand. Atelier of V. F. Dobroslavsky, Gymnasium Students, and Russian Turkestan in the Early

Tavria »

This cabinet portrait from early 20th century Samarkand is a very interesting historical photograph. The image shows a family of five: father, mother, and three children. Particularly notable are the two boys wearing matching gymnasium uniforms with caps and schoolbooks in their hands.

The photograph was produced in the studio of:

“Photography of V. F. Dobroslavsky in Samarkand”

The image is valuable not only as a family portrait, but also as a historical document from the era of Russian Turkestan.

Dating the Photograph

Based on the clothing, cabinet card style, and gymnasium uniforms, the photograph can be dated approximately to:

1905–1915

Several details support this dating. These include the cabinet portrait format, the boys’ uniforms and peaked caps, the standing collars typical of the period, the style of the woman’s scarf and dress, and the late Art Nouveau typography on the mount.

The photograph clearly belongs to the period of established Russian imperial administration in Turkestan.

Who Is Depicted in the Photograph

The composition suggests a typical middle-class urban family of the Russian Empire.

The father appears dignified and respectable. He wears a double-breasted uniform jacket with piping and a service cap with cockade. Several possibilities exist regarding his profession. He may have worked for the railway administration, the postal or telegraph service, or one of the technical or civil departments of Turkestan.

The children’s clothing is especially interesting. The two younger boys wear identical gymnasium-style shirts and caps with insignia. They are holding books, most likely school textbooks or educational materials.

The third child, standing between the parents, was also probably attending a school or preparatory institution. He wears a characteristic belt with a metal buckle. However, it is possible that the belt originally belonged to one of the older brothers.

The mother’s face appears calm and emotionally restrained. Such serious expressions were very common in studio photography of the period, when people had to remain motionless during relatively long exposures.

Samarkand During the Era of This Photograph

At the time this photograph was taken, Samarkand was already part of the Russian Empire and one of the major cities of Russian Turkestan.

Russian forces captured Samarkand in 1868 during the conquest of Central Asia. Afterward, the city gradually developed into an important administrative, military, and commercial center.

One of the most important events in Samarkand’s modernization was the arrival of the railway.

Was There a Railway in Samarkand?

Yes, absolutely.

Samarkand became connected to the Trans-Caspian Railway in 1888. A major bridge across the Amu Darya River made the extension of the railway possible.

This dramatically transformed the city. Trade expanded rapidly, Russian officials and engineers arrived, schools and gymnasiums developed, and European-style districts began to grow.

Because of this, the theory that the father worked in the railway system appears quite plausible.

The Atelier of V. F. Dobroslavsky

Very little information about photographer V. F. Dobroslavsky has survived, which is not unusual for provincial photographers of Russian Turkestan.

However, the existence of such a studio in Samarkand itself demonstrates the growing urban and cultural development of the city. Studios like this typically served officials, military officers, teachers, merchants, and Russian settler families.

Dobroslavsky’s photography appears typical of provincial Russian studios in Central Asia. Minimal decoration, formal posing, and soft lighting were characteristic of this style.

The cabinet mount itself is rather modest and inexpensive, suggesting an ordinary family portrait rather than an elite commission.

Samarkand During the Revolution and Civil War

After the Russian Revolution of 1917, Samarkand became caught up in the chaos of the Civil War.

Russian Turkestan experienced armed conflicts, anti-Bolshevik uprisings, the Basmachi movement, and struggles for control of the railways.

For Russian families living in Turkestan, this was an extremely difficult period. Many officials, engineers, and employees either fled the region or disappeared during the violence of the Civil War.

The fate of this particular family is unknown, but photographs like this are now seen as the final visual traces of relatively peaceful life in Russian Turkestan before the disasters of the 20th century.

What Samarkand Is Today

Today Samarkand is located in:

Uzbekistan

It is one of the oldest cities in Central Asia and one of the great historical centers of the Islamic world.

Modern Samarkand is famous for Registan Square, the mausoleum of Timur (Tamerlane), ancient madrasas, Timurid architecture, and UNESCO World Heritage monuments.

The city remains one of the major cultural and tourist centers of Central Asia.

Collectible Value of the Photograph

Despite visible wear and damage, this photograph has significant collector value because of its rare connection to Samarkand, its association with pre-revolutionary Russian Turkestan, the gymnasium uniforms of the children, the probable railway affiliation of the father, and the little-known provincial photographer.

Photographs from pre-revolutionary Samarkand are considerably rarer than images from the European part of the Russian Empire. Family portraits featuring schoolchildren and a clearly identifiable local studio from Russian Turkestan are especially uncommon today.

«Фотографiя В. Ф.

Датировка фотографiи

на желѣзной дорогѣ;

рѣдкой привязкѣ къ Самарканду;
дореволюціонному Русскому Туркестану;
гимназической формѣ дѣтей;
возможной служебной принадлежности отца;
