A Portrait from the Alfred Apel Photography Studio at Myasnitskie Vorota

Two Young Women from Old Moscow

This atmospheric photograph from pre-revolutionary Moscow is a fine example of the urban portrait culture of the late Russian Empire. The image was produced in the photographic studio of Alfred Apel, a Moscow photographer whose works are now encountered far less frequently than those of the giant photographic firms of imperial Russia.

The card belongs to the classic carte-de-visite format, once extremely popular throughout Europe and the Russian Empire. Such photographs were exchanged between relatives and friends, placed into family albums, and carefully preserved as keepsakes. Today they have become valuable historical artifacts connected with old Moscow and the visual memory of the imperial era.

Alfred Apel and His Moscow Studio

The reverse side of the card contains the inscription:

Moscow, Myasnitskie Vorota.

The mention of Myasnitskie Vorota immediately places the photograph within the historical center of old Moscow. In the late nineteenth century this district was one of the important commercial and intellectual areas of the city. Photographic studios located there served students, teachers, officials, merchants, and representatives of the urban middle class.

Although Alfred Apel is not among the most famous names of Russian imperial photography, his studio clearly belonged to the respectable professional level of Moscow commercial photography. The decorative reverse side demonstrates that the atelier invested heavily in elegant presentation and advertising. The design includes imperial heraldry, ornamental typography, and references to portrait enlargements and negative preservation, all typical signs of a serious photographic business during the 1890s.

For collectors interested in Moscow, pre-revolutionary Moscow, and lesser-known regional photographers of the Russian Empire, cards from the Alfred Apel studio are noticeably less common than photographs from massive firms such as Scherer, Nabholz, or Renard. Because of this, the studio carries a certain niche collector interest today.

Dating the Photograph

Based on the clothing, hairstyles, studio style, and card design, the photograph can be dated approximately to the period between 1895 and 1905.

The women’s fashion strongly reflects the transition from late Victorian aesthetics toward early Art Nouveau influences. Both women wear dark high-collared dresses typical of educated urban society of the era. The slightly voluminous sleeves and carefully arranged hairstyles are especially characteristic of women’s fashion around the turn of the twentieth century.

The studio lighting and soft retouching also fit this period perfectly. The lower part of the image fades into a light vignette, creating the elegant floating effect commonly used in quality portrait photography of late imperial Moscow.

The Women in the Portrait

The photograph shows two young women standing very close together, almost touching heads. Such compositions were extremely popular in the late nineteenth century because they emphasized emotional intimacy and family connection.

They may have been sisters, close friends, classmates, or relatives. Similar double portraits were often created:

before graduation from a gymnasium;
before marriage;
for exchange between family members;
as memory portraits for albums.

The woman on the left appears slightly younger and more restrained, while the woman on the right gives a stronger and more confident impression. Their serious expressions reflect the traditions of formal studio photography of the time, when long exposure times and social etiquette encouraged calm, composed poses.

Artistic Quality and Atmosphere

Despite the simplicity of the composition, the portrait demonstrates professional studio craftsmanship. The lighting is soft and balanced, the faces are carefully retouched, and the framing is elegant without becoming overly theatrical.

What makes the image especially attractive today is its emotional atmosphere. Many surviving photographs from imperial Russia feel stiff or distant, but this portrait preserves a surprisingly human and intimate mood. It feels less like a commercial studio product and more like a quiet fragment of everyday life from old Moscow.

Condition and Collectible Value

The condition of the card is mixed. The front side remains relatively well preserved, while the reverse shows stains, fading, moisture traces, and wear. Nevertheless, the important inscriptions remain readable, and the overall aesthetic impression is still strong.

For collectors of pre-revolutionary Moscow photography, such images are valued not only for rarity but also for atmosphere. The emotional quality of the portrait, combined with the lesser-known Moscow studio attribution, makes this card an interesting historical and collectible object connected with the visual culture of late imperial Russia.

имперская символика;
декоративная типографія;
художественные орнаменты;
упоминаніе увеличенія портретовъ;

высокія закрытыя воротники платьевъ;
характерныя женскія прически;
мягкая студійная ретушь;
переходный стиль между поздневикторіанской модой и раннимъ модерномъ;

сестры;
близкія подруги;
родственницы;

передъ окончаніемъ гимназіи;
передъ замужествомъ;
«на память»;

загрязненія;
слѣды влаги;
потемненія;
